Reproduction Relief of Christ from the 1900 Oberammergau Passion Play

An outbreak of bubonic plague devastated Bavaria during the Thirty Years War. After losing over half of their population, villagers of Oberammergau vowed that if God spared them from the plague, they would perform a play every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus.

No one died of the plague in Oberammergau after that vow, and the villagers have kept their word to God by performing the passion play for the first time in 1634l, every 10 years, to the present.

In Oberammergau, the craftsmanship of woodcarving has been handed down from generation to generation. Hand-finished by master carver Niki Covington, this reproduction is from an original wood carving dated early 1900s.
